SJSU Hosts Nationally Recognized Speakers and Performers for Transgender Awareness Week, March 8th – 11th, 2010

San José, CA – San Jose State University is proud to host Transgender Awareness Week, March 8th – 11th, 2010. This collaborative event will feature national renowned Trans experts along with local activists to educate the SJSU campus and local community about Transgender people. The week will feature art, film, scholarship and performance to present the intricacies of life for people who identify as transgender.

An award-winning photodocumentary, “Transfigurations” by Jana Marcus (SJSU Alumni, MFA 2005) will kick off the week on Monday, March 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the University Room. Marcus' photographs focus on what it means to be a man and a woman, by people who have transitioned to the opposite sex, blurring the lines of gender separation, stereotyping, and discovering cultural influences. Marcus will be on hand with participants of the show to give a lecture and Q&A on the making of the project and its impact.

Day two will feature the film, “Diagnosing Difference,” followed by a panel including the filmmaker, Dr. Annalise Ophelian, a San Francisco-based human sexuality consultant and Trans ally who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology; and transactivists, Cecila Chung, Chair-San Francisco Human Rights Commission; and Renata J. Razza, a cultural competence trainer; who are featured in the film. Diagnosing Difference explores the many complexities of the medical diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) from the perspectives of those it affects most directly and personally, including access to medical care, legal ramifications, social stigma, implications for psychotherapeutic care, treatment trauma, and differences in experience based on factors like race, class, gender orientation, and generation. The film screening will be held on Tuesday, March 9th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by the panel from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Engineering Bldg, Room, 189.

“America’s Transsexual Sweetheart,” Calpernia Addams hosts a Trans 101 discussion on Wednesday, March 10th from 12:00 to 1:15 p.m. in the University Room. Calpernia will entertain and educate the audience on anything Trans; if you don’t know very much about Transgender issues then this is the session for you! Calpernia’s discussion will be followed by a panel discussion from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. featuring local Trans students and activists.

The week will conclude with a Cabaret Benefit Performance by Calpernia Addams. Come experience cabaret with one of the best! Calpernia will sing and dance her way into your heart and make you laugh along the way. Join us on Thursday, March 11th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the University Room. All proceeds will benefit the Community Health Partnership TransPowerment Program.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information about this event call 408-924-6157 or visit http://www.sjsu.edu/wrc or email sjsuwrc@gmail.com.
