"In the advert, the commentator references a Facebook post made by a fan, saying they "can't wait to see some beauties at Ladies' Day". The Irish firm claim to agree, but make things interesting by sending in some trans-gender 'ladies'. They then ask the viewers to "spot the Stallions from the Mares..."

If nothing else, the commercial is confusing to me. It starts out saying that there will be trans-gender "ladies" at the racing event. I may be wrong, old-fashioned, or sorely out of touch or uninformed, but I thought transgender ladies were transwomen... male-bodied individuals who identify as women. NOT drag queens. Of course, I guess my first clue that this couldn't possibly be serious was that "ladies" was in quotation marks.
My confusion level was torqued a bit more when I heard and saw the part about spotting mares who are really stallions. The icing on the cake was the woman coming out of the men's room. I'm thinking that only a [transvestite], drag queen or impersonator should be coming out of the men's room.
So is this another product of misinformation - that crossdressers, drag queens, impersonator and transwomen are all one and the same? Or is this another poor choice, using a marginalized group, to get laughs?
If the event is to be for fun, then it should be advertised in such a way that there is no question what's going on... and that those involved are drag queens and impersonators being used for the purpose of entertainment, and not a set-up for enabling people to have an endorsed laugh at the expense of transwomen.

"PADDY Power has defended his controversial advert that was screened at the weekend asking viewers if they can spot transgender men and women in an advert." -Paddy Power Defends Advert, independent.ie
Anyone remember that ad including transgender men? Not to mention it was billed as Cheltenham Ladies Day. As I recall, it featured all women with demeaning captions/narrating/surroundings.
Perhaps it doesn't matter if there were both men and women... we all know these kinds of things are more detrimental to the women. That's what people remember.
"The bookmaker has pointed out that the TV advert which asks can viewers ‘spot the stallions from the mares’ in the reel of transgender race goers has received more likes than dislikes on You Tube." -Paddy Power Defends Advert, independent.ie
Can't say that's anything to brag about. In my opinion, just shows how little regard those who've "liked" the ad have for TG/TS women.
"In the advert that promotes Cheltenham Ladies Day and screened on TV4, Channel 4 and Sky , the bookie promises to make the event more exciting by sending some transgender ladies along, and then asks viewers if they can tell who is a stallion and who is a mare as a parade of people are shown." -Paddy Power Defends Advert, independent.ie
Ya gotta be kidding...it's getting worse! Sounds more like a classic, raucous "Maury" show.
"'This was passed by Clearcast in the UK which checks all ads, so it is not offensive” said Paddy Power." -Paddy Power Defends Advert, independent.ie
Maybe Clearcast needs to re-visit what's considered offensive, and what's not, so that entities like Paddy Power can't find room to claim ignorance.

UPDATE - Paddy Power ad loses it's bid

"Upholding the complaints, the ASA said: "We considered that the ad trivialised a highly complex issue and depicted a number of common negative stereotypes about trans people." -ASA Rules Ad Offensive, bbc.co.uk
ASA rules Paddy Power transgender TV ad was offensive

The caption below one of the accompanying images reads, "Paddy Power said it had cast members of the transgender community in the advert," as if this made everything better. That transgender people were allegedly cast just means to me that they didn't necessarily have to be [trans]women since the transgender term covers cross-dressers/transvestites and, some contend, drag queens too.
If they did indeed employ [trans]women, then I can't help but think the women participated despite the negative affect...much like some women will take roles in porn films despite the negative affect it can have on how girls think of themselves, and how boys think of girls.
