A thick skin is good I guess sometimes...but not everyone has that thick skin. And really, when it comes to identity, one shouldn't have to have a thick skin to fend against the crap that people sling one's way.
And what about kids? They aren't born with thick skins. What kind of adult would a kid make who had to develop a thick skin to keep from being hurt by the butt heads of the world? Especially since butt heads are butt heads to everyone, regardless of age.
This would be a cold world if we all developed a thick skin... for reason, or just in case.
