WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump is barring transgender people from serving in the military "in any capacity," citing "tremendous medical costs and disruption."

Trump's announcement Wednesday morning on Twitter did not say what would happen to transgender people already in the military.

President Trump said he will ban transgender people from serving in the military in any capacity, a reversal of the Obama administration decision that would have allowed transgender recruits to serve, he announced on social media on Wednesday.

Previous Integration Efforts and the Experiences of Foreign Militaries Indicate a Minimal Likely Impact on Force Readiness

  • The limited research on the effects of foreign military policies indicates little or no impact on unit cohesion, operational effectiveness, or readiness. Commanders noted that the policies had benefits for all service members by creating a more inclusive and diverse force.
  • Policy changes to open more roles to women and to allow gay and lesbian personnel to serve openly in the U.S. military have similarly had no significant effect on unit cohesion, operational effectiveness, or readiness.

I was having lunch with a friend today who is a military veteran - he was disgusted by this policy, but also horrified because of the impact it will have on the overall military. For one thing it's apparently difficult enough as it is to get troops ready for deployment, to arbitrarily kick out 15,000 people will make that problem so much worse. It also sets a horrible precedent, showing service members that a president can just decide to retroactively remove people from the services.

Just wanted to add those points to the already obvious civil rights issues.

If they do kick out the 15 thousand troops they have to replace them. Not going to be easy because some are in high security positions.

Here is something heartening - I was listening to something on a YouTube clip uploaded by CNN.  At the moment, this is only a freakin' tweet.  And the military powers-that-be have indicated they don't plan on taking any action until Drumpf spits out some guidelines.

Hopefully, with all the out-cry, and the contant re-running by the media of all of Drumpf's campaign declarations to protect the TGLB community, he will back down and retract that tweet, and leave things be.

Of course on the other hand... he's been bent on UN-doing everything and anything Obama did.  He also needs stuff to deflect peoples' attention from the Russian investigation.

Transgender SEAL to Trump: Tell Me to My Face I'm Not Worthy

A retired Navy SEAL Team 6 hero who is transgender had a message for President Donald Trump after he announced the US military would bar transgender people from serving.

"Let's meet face to face and you tell me I'm not worthy," Kristin Beck, a 20-year veteran of the Navy SEALs, told Business Insider on Wednesday. "Transgender doesn't matter. Do your service."

Beck said Trump's abrupt change in policy could negatively affect many currently or wanting to serve in the military. The RAND Corporation estimated in 2016 that there were between 1,320 and 6,630 transgender people serving. Many of them just want to serve their country like everyone else, Beck said.

Commandant: 'I Will Not Break Faith' With Transgender Coast Guardsmen

As military services await guidance following President Donald Trump's announcement last week via Twitter of a ban on transgender service members, the commandant of the Coast Guard is speaking out, saying he has no intention of leaving transgender Coast Guardsmen out in the cold.

Speaking on the topic for the first time at the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Tuesday morning, Adm. Paul Zukunft said his first action upon becoming aware of Trump's tweets was to have his office reach out to all 13 members of the Coast Guard who have self-identified as transgender.

Trump's Transgender Ban In Military Will Focus On New Enlistments

August 24, 20177:35 AM ET

Transgender members of the U.S. military would be subject to removal at Defense Secretary James Mattis' discretion — and the service would bar transgender people from enlisting, under new White House guidelines for the Pentagon. President Trump announced the ban via a tweet last month.

Rough details of the guidelines were confirmed by NPR's Tom Bowman after the White House plan for the Pentagon was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Gay and lesbian troops have been able to serve openly in the U.S. military since 2011; transgender service members were allowed to do the same in 2016, through an order from Defense Secretary Ash Carter. That order deferred setting policy on new enlistments.

The Obama administration had set a deadline of July 1, 2017, for the U.S. military to decide how to handle transgender recruits. But as NPR's Phil Ewing has reported, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis put off that deadline in June.

Mattis hasn't spoken much about the plan, and it's not known how rigorously he would enforce a policy on transgender troops. Tom reports, "The big issue for Mattis is service. If you're in the military, people who know him say, he'll give a lot of leeway for keeping transgender people in — unless there's some huge medical issue that prevents deployability."

On July 26, Trump stated in a series of tweets that the U.S. would not allow transgender people "to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military."

Assessing the Implications of Allowing Transgender Personnel to Serve Openly

by Agnes Gereben SchaeferRadha IyengarSrikanth KadiyalaJennifer KavanaghCharles C. EngelKayla M. WilliamsAmii Kress

Recent U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) policy banned transgender personnel from serving openly in the military. Potential changes to this policy raised questions regarding access to gender transition–related health care, the range of transition-related treatments that DoD will need to provide, the potential costs associated with these treatments, and the impact of these health care needs on force readiness and the deployability of transgender service members. A RAND study identified the health care needs of the transgender population and transgender service members in particular. It also examined the costs of covering transition-related treatments, assessed the potential readiness implications of a policy change, and reviewed the experiences of foreign militaries that permit transgender personnel to serve openly.
