  2. I am registered with the Independent Party. As such, I get mail from political action groups proposing this and that. Imagine my amusement that I was mailed a "Myths about Same Sex Marriage" brochure from a local group of bigots. They wanted me to send a donation so they can help spread the word that marriage is between one man and one woman.

    One of their arguments is as follows;

Q: Isn't it discrimination to deny marriages to gays and lesbians?
No. Every person -- male and female -- is treated equally under current marriage laws. These laws forbid marrying close relatives, people under a certain age or a person of the same gender.
Really?! Damn... you mean I can't marry my cousin? Or a 10 year-old? Who would've known?

And marrying a person of the same gender is in the same category as incest and pedophilia? I didn't know that either.

Well, at least everyone is treated equally, right? Well if it's so fair, why can't I marry the female partner that I love. How is that fair?

This mailer sought to enlighten me about the evils of gay marriage, and requested that I send in a nice donation to help them spread the word. Fortunately they included a postage paid envelope so I mailed it back to them, and wrote in large, red letters

  5. A Maryland-based priest is garnering heat in the blogosphere today after allegedly denying communion to a lesbian parishioner attending her mother's funeral.

Priest Denies Communion To Lesbian Parishioner At Her Mother's Funeral

Opinion -- I don't claim that my gaydar is all that great, or that I even possess it... but the body language, the gestures, and the way in which this priests speaks...sure screams "gay." Could he be? And if so, that could explain why he seemed to go over-board in his misguided beliefs, ruining a funeral.
  6. She was called "the accidental activist." One article was headlined, "Prom victim to Pride hero."

After speaking up in 2010 against the discrimination at Itawamba Agricultural High School which refused to allow her to wear a tux and bring her girlfriend to the prom, Constance McMillen became a sudden celebrity.

McMillen was awarded damages in excess of $30K; the school district was ordered to pay her legal fees, and agreed to implement policies to prevent discrimination of LGBT students; talkshow host, Ellen DeGeneres, gave McMillen as $30K scholarship; Glamour mag named her '2010 Woman of the Year;' the NY Pride Parade chose her to be Grand Marshal; and Obama invited her to the White House.

McMillen had transferred to a new school and graduated in 2011. According to an October 2011 article, she is a psychology student at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

  7. -- the thread ended in late October 2010 with the news that Clint McCance had resigned. I guess after that, McCance was pretty much forgotten about. But I wondered today, after combing through old threads, had his life recovered from his famous facebook rant? Or had the publicity made life difficult after the dust settled.

I found a multi-page article on written about five months after the McCance fiasco. By the title of the article, it appears that the only thing anyone in Pleasant Plains learned was to watch what they say - not acceptance and tolerance. After reading the whole article, I can't help but believe that Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, will continue to belch out "Clint McCances" for some time to come.

"We don't need the gay rights people to come in and support our homosexuals, because there is none. If there is, they're in the closet."

You'd think that statement was spat out by someone who's lived there for 50-some-odd years, set in his/her beliefs, hardened with years of bigotry. In reality, it was a 2007 Midland graduate.

"If you'll notice, you don't see nobody from Pleasant Plains going down to Little Rock telling them damn folks how to live," [Mike Vaughn] said. "I'm afraid that you will find that most everybody around here has my opinion: that ya'll need to go back to Little Rock and let this thing die a natural death."

And die it must have... 'cause I could find nothing more recent about Clint McCance and the facebook incident than this article. And really, the article was more about Pleasant Plains and how it fared than it was about McCance. As far as McCance's as if he's disappeared.

"A Georgia college's controversial "personal lifestyle statement" which includes rejecting homosexuality has led to an exodus of faculty members."

Shorter University's 'Personal Lifestyle Statement' Which Bans Gay Employees Leads To Faculty Exodus

I debated on whether or not to even post this news story after discovering that "rejecting homosexuality" was not the main, or only, requirement in the school's "personal lifestyle statement" as the headline seemed to imply. Considering an anonymous survey indicated that only 12% of the faculty planned to stay with the school, I can't help but believe that there were other "lifestyle" issues that have allegedly caused 88% to walk. It would be more interesting (in my opinion) to know how many of the faculty are leaving for the sole reason that the school rejects homosexuality, because while it seems that some do not condone it, some are leaving because the school has placed itself in a position of judging others, and which sins with which to judge.

  19. Obama: First President To Mention Gay Rights In Inaugural Speech

President Obama made history today when he mentioned both the Stonewall uprising and gay and lesbian people being treated "like anyone else under the law" during his second inauguration speech.

"We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths -- that all of us are created equal -- is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall..." he said.

He continued: "It is now our generation's task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law -- for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

This the first time that a president has addressed gay rights during an inauguration speech.
