  1. i happened to turn to ABC-TV tonite just in time to catch the news program 20/20's segment about a widow who's in a legal battle with her late husband's family. the widow is a transwoman who says he knew it from day one but loved her unconditionally. his family (and their lawyer) says he didn't have a clue and was devistated when he found out.

Nikki Araguz will probably lose all contact with her late husband's children, she'll probably lose any benefits that would have gone to a wife because as far as TX is concerned... she is a male, which in the eyes of TX law...made her marriage a same-sex marriage - illegal in TX. and so her marriage is considered null and void, which means she's not a widow and therefore entitled to nothing.

"This story just seems to represent such a tragedy for everyone involved. Unfortunately, this situation highlights many injustices faced by transgendered families in this country." -Masen Davis, executive director, Transgender Law Center, San Francisco

the video is not online yet, but you can read the story and catch a vid clip or two...

  3. Yep, Texas

“In Houston, transgender widow Nikki Araguz has appealed a district judge’s ruling denying her death benefits from her late husband, Thomas Araguz III, a volunteer firefighter who was killed in the line of duty in 2010.
The judge, Randy Clapp, granted summary judgment to Thomas Araguz’s family, which filed a lawsuit alleging the couple’s 2008 marriage is void because Nikki Araguz was born male, and Texas law prohibits same-sex marriage.” - John Wright

"The preliminary study by Laura Case, Ramachandran’s student, raises the prospect of a new category of transgenderism. “Alternating gender incongruity (AGI),” the neuropsychiatric term the researchers have tentatively proposed, describes the involuntary change of gender identity, along with perceived phantom sex characteristics, a tendency toward ambidexterity and bipolar disorder, all signs that suggest a biological basis for AGI."

"Among those to praise the new law was Kara Suffredini, executive director of MassEquality, one of the organizations that lobbied for the law. "This a tremendously historic and life-changing day for transgender people across the state, and really for anybody that values fairness," she told the Globe.

Others shared those sentiments. "This will hopefully empower community members to step forward when they are facing discrimination," Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC) Executive Director Gunner Scott told EDGE Boston. "Furthermore, it will be proactive in educating state agencies, employers, school systems on treating transgender people fairly and equally like all other residents."" -huffingtonpost.com

"Unfortunately, this type of discrimination is frightfully commonplace: According to a National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) survey, one in five trans people have been denied medical care from doctors, clinics, hospitals and ambulance drivers. Under the Affordable Care Act, however, discrimination against transgender and LGBT patients is illegal in federally funded healthcare programs." -queerty.com

A city is proposing to ban titles such as Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms in case they offend the transgender community.

Councillors in Brighton will vote on the proposal to remove the words from official forms and paperwork after complaints that they forced people to ‘choose between genders’.

The proposal is backed by Brighton and Hove City Council deputy leader Phelim MacCafferty, who has called the titles 'useless'.

But the new proposal has been branded 'political correctness gone too far' by an opposition councillor who says the idea is 'ludicrous'.. -dailymail.co.uk

  15. The case of transgender Catholic school teacher Mark Krolikowski: Keeping the faith while gender notions evolve

    By Jim Fitzgerald

Mark Krolikowskiwore his hair at shoulder length, his nails long and well manicured, and his ears pierced. His appearance, which evolved over the 32 years he’d spent teaching at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, had always been considered a bit unconventional for a Catholic school teacher, but it had caused no problems until October 2011 when the parent of a freshman student complained, setting in motion a series of events that culminated in Krolikowski’s dismissal.
The former teacher says he was laid off because he informed school officials that he was transgender. He has filed suit. The school’s attorney says Krolikowski was fired for “nondiscriminatory reasons.”

This article [unwitingly] highlights what appears to be classic gay indifference of transpeople on the part of the two gay men who were interviewed - despite their claim of being horrified with what happened. It was well into the interview before they even used any pronouns for the victim (and inconsistently at that)...and then could only say the victim had been subjected to homophobia instead of transphobia. As a part of the LGBT community, they should be familiar with such terms and the difference. But it seems always that is transpeople who seem to be well versed in all aspects of sex and gender, and make an effort to respect others by referring to them properly. -Mike

But it has also shined a spotlight on the fact that Fairfax County and Virginia have no laws prohibiting discrimination by businesses against members of the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgendered community." --washingtonpost.com
