Hi everyone, I recently started volunteering at Identity House - a volunteer group in NYC that provides peer counseling, support groups, and therapy referrals for LGBT people - and a term has been used in various settings there that I wanted to ask people here about. Specifically, people will use the term "person of trans experience" - I wanted to see if others had heard that term, and what you think of it? Personally, I'm not a fan, it irks me as much as "transgendered" (it's not something that happened to me! It's who I am!!). The way I often respond is to ask people to consider the same construction for lesbian or gay people and see how it sounds - so "person of gay ex…

I know I find the term Genital Reconstuction Surgery the best one, because to me it is the most accurate. That's what the operation does, it reconstructs your genitals. I don't like the term "sex change operation" because I feel it's almost the transphobic title that it's been given and we're not changing our sex, we have always been girls, now we're just matching our body to our mind. Sex reassignment surgery I don't really have a problem with.

Hi Everyone, I've been stewing about this and wasn't sure where to put it, so decided to get it out on it's own topic... The male testosterone...I've heard makes you "hairier, greaser and more horny.." and that is sticking with me like a raspberry seed in my wisdom tooth. Though I definitely want to transition at some point (and sooner than later is starting to sound super nice) I don't *like* hair on the face, or underarms. It's just me. I'd rather stay basically hair-free (though hair on my lower legs is fine). Add to that the idea of being "greasier" doesn't sit well at all (more prone to acne, perhaps?). Call me silly if you will, it's just the way I feel. I…

Well, recently I've been really feeling as if I belong as a boy. The thing is, I was extremely girly as a child. I am going to 7th grade currently, the hesitation in gender roles, and just being a girl started around 4th grade. That wasn't much though, I just started fearing wearing skirts. Actually, no, it was when puberty started for me. When my balls that were misplaced onto my chest started growing. (my way of saying it reduces frustration) My mom says that she just thinks its a hormonal imbalance because of that, and this is probably a phase. The thought of dressing as a girl, and everything as a GIRL not only scares me, but makes me angry, upset, and want to…

I thought I'd post this as a companion topic to the TG Movies thread. Does anybody have any links to online TG comix or graphic novels they'd like to share? I have been a longtime reader of Venus Envy, and always enjoyed it immensely, although, sadly, the updates have been far-and-few-between lately. This morning while link-surfing I was fortunate enough to come across the Jack Pallett Refridgeration online comic book. The genre is gutterpunk--and definitely much grittier than VE, but I find the artwork and storyline to be some of the most compelling and engrossing work of its kind I've ever seen. At any rate, I just thought I'd post these for those who might…

Here's a list that I have with a short summary for each. A couple are not exactly TG but about waking up/reincarnated and being in the opposite gender's body, something most of us have dreamed about. Bonnie Switch (1991) : A sexist, chauvinist pig gets his just desserts when his angry ex-girlfriends murder him and he is reincarnated as a woman. Just Like a Woman (1992) : Gerald is a yuppie-like transvestite in his thirties. His wife arrives home earlier than expected and discovers female attire spread over their apartment. Not knowing anything about his habit, she misinterprets this and throws him (and the attire) out of their home and marriage. He rents a ro…

TG names are very personal choices that we (TG's) make to identify our selves to each other and often to the world at large. Many of the name choices have poignant, or happenstance or humorous beginnings. It would be fun to hear how you chose your name or how it was bestowed upon you. My "Manly Man" name is Leo (which I intensely dislike), my en'femme) name is Loe' (Lowee) Muir. Loe was a serendipitous accident. Our beloved telephone service provider transposed letters in my first name in the local telephone directory. Soon I began receiving bulk mail addressed to Loe'. I found the name to be fun and it fits well. I am a Californian and a long distance backp…

I dont know if this has been discussed or not yet. But I, right now, get medical assistance from the state I live in. Which means I have to go to DES to get it renewed every 3 months or so. Anyway, when I have to go there, I like that they have to call me by my choosen name, but being that I dont totally pass for male in the chest area, I get people staring in my direction. Anywhere I go that I use MY name, I get that. Does this bother anyone else? How do you handle it?

Some time ago there was a link posted here to a TG questionaire developed to identify where one falls in the male-female spectrum. As I recall there was a scale of +1500 (being 100% female) to -1500 (being 100% male). If anyone could provide me with that link it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Erica.

On Monday I attended my first real-life Transgender meeting in Appleton Wisconsin. TG guide prepared me well, for I spent most of the meeting listening to others. Then I asked one question and about ten people were suddenely eager to answer me directly. I felt comfortable in the group and I plan on going there every month. I strongly encourage anyone who has not had a real life experience like this to find a local group in your area. What is really helpful is to hear everyone's voices and see their mannerisms. The overall feeling is similar to watching some of the videos on you tube but even better. I am much more confident about myself after seeing how com…

Here's an article I read today about the relevance of Pride weeks. There is a recognition that gays and lesbians are becoming more and more acceptable in society particularly by the younger generation and that the focus needs to shift towards the transgenders and transexuals. http://lifewise.canoe.ca/Beauty/AskIvana/2...22/4282306.html Bonnie

I’ve been here for about a year and a half now. I’ve met so many amazing people, and learned so much in that time. Many things I never would have thought of, much of which was need-to-know. And unlike other sites I’ve been to, it was offered with love and respect. I’ve seen a few conversations that could be considered controversial, but everyone kept it clean and the language appropriate. This site strives for a PG rating, and it has earned it. So I just wanted to thank everyone here for their help on my journey. And if I have helped even one person for 5 seconds, I want to say thank you for having given me that opportunity.

I just want to give Aylwin some public gratitude. Over a week ago, I would have been terrified of letting anyone know. Talking to Aylwin and seeing how well that had been going to her really encouraged me to tell an old friend. I even got to hang out with this friend this weekend as shannon and it went really excellently. I was a bit nervous, but other than that she said it was one of the more normal/fun social times we'd had in years(possibly ever). That was on Sunday, and I thought that went well enough that I told a good amount of my closes friends yesterday, and even hung out with a couple last night. Things really couldn't better in regard to how everything wor…

First I am not afraid to be out of the ordinary. I call that extraordinary. Also if I use the word disorder in here I am going by the current diagnoses of Gender Identity Disorder. You may not think of yourself as disordered at all. I am not implying anthing by using the word other than the point that I am discussing in this thread. I was thinking about something rather philosophical this morning and I hope that you see a positive in this. I happen to enjoy watching Star Trek a lot with my family and they often use the word Anomaly to describe something that doesn't follow what they usually expect and they often do not have a lot of information about it. As you re…

For the women: Do you think more highly of women than most genetic women seem to? For the men: Do you share any misogynistic beliefs with genetic men? (I won't be offended if you say yes.) My answer: As many of you know, I'm a feminist. Even a lot of feminists consider me extreme. A few things that are true of me but not a lot of genetic women I know: My entire concept of politics revolves around how something affects women (that includes transwomen). I don't care all that much about many other issues. For me, the average person is a woman. When I picture a person, it's usually a woman unless something strongly suggests otherwise. Someone who is not obviousl…

  24. Today, I clikked on a link in the profile of one of our newest members, MindOrMirror, which in turn led me to clik on a map she has on her webpage. The map is a graphic which shows where in the world LGBT people have rights and where being LGBT can even get you killed - legally. The map is a stark compilaton of all the bits and pieces of info and news we read scattered across the media. Recently, a post was made by prettyinpink1979 in the thread " in which she wrote, "...we may be the most sophisticated nation on Earth, but we are far from the most cilivized and we rank as one of the lowest first world countries in terms of education." I guess that in the U.S. w…

  25. I came across this article yesterday and found it so interesting, especially the graphical representations of gender identity, the spectrums within them, and social norms. Very interesting and informative: The Biochemical Nature of Gender Identity For example, there's this graph: I'm certain that I'm on the femme side of the feminine stereotype but not to the hyperfemme extreme. But isn't it cool the way that the graph also illustrates the transgender umbrella? I've met cis men who just need to get their femme on from time to time. Many cis lesbian women present to the right of the stereotypical line, and they are adamant that butch lesbian women are not "…
