in WORLD, 20/04/2012 "Before Jenna Talackova, there was Chaz Bono; before him, Brandon Teena; and, back in the 1950s, Christine Jorgensen. Transgender people have had a long, loud struggle in the media, from Jerry Springer’s earliest ratings-bait drama productions to Donald Trump deciding recently to ban a transgender pageant hopeful — only to have the organization overturn the ban and institute a policy of acceptance." -ilga.org Changing Times: Members of transgender community tell their history in media and pop culture Image from http://www.sixtyminu.../my-secret-self

I've been thinking a lot about this topic lately, especially as I've been reading that Gender Outlaw book. It actually fills in a major hole for me in my understanding of the world around me, because people often tend to assume that I will want to take charge, go first, take the biggest portions, whatever; that their needs are submissive to mine. This always annoyed the living %@#%@ out of me, honestly. I used to be a pretty overbearing and selfish kid, but as I grew up I've tried to consciously shed most of that and think of the needs and feelings of others in anything I do. I don't always succeed, but I got to a point where I realized I was trampling on people occasion…

Hello, My name is Stevie, and I am looking for a doctor in Minnesota to begin the male to female transformation. I was wondering if any of you know a good physician to see for the first time. I would be grateful for any suggestions any of you may have in helping me with this. I didn't even know where to start until I ran across this site. So please help me to become the woman I believe I was born to be. Thank-you Stevie

Some of you may have already seen this video - I saw it for the first time this past weekend. My brother is the one who told me about it. We've all heard of stories of people being misgendered. Sometimes it's an innocent mistake. Sometimes it's arrogant refusal to accept a person's gender identity. Then there are the cases, usually officials of some sort, who insist they must refer to a person based on legal ID or other documentation. The woman in this vid literally came unhinged. It's unclear if the misgendering was intentional. Question is, does her behavior hurt the trans community? Does it do trans woman any good for someone like the woman in the vid to l…

While out with a transgender friend accompanied a cisgender female, transgender admirer who I must say is gorgeous we started talking about being misgendered. My friend mentioned there were a few times she was misgendered which I would only think she would because of her body structure, something you really can hide if you have decent muscles or inherently masculine bone structure. I reminded my friend of me in regards to being misgendered and her cisgender friend spoke up and said, I could never imagine you being misgendered which is always good to hear. I think part of this is not only facial features and voice which are the two things that are giveaways (and eyebrows a…

Misgendering happens, whether you’re a trans man, trans woman, non-binary... especially if you’re not cis. What to do? I’ve talked about this several times over the months I’ve been seeing Sandy Hirsch, my voice therapist and coach. As a cis woman who’s very supportive and experienced with many transgender clients, she’s an excellent resource to discuss issues like these. Early on - when I was still pretty on edge - I told her that I’d be a little righteously indignant to someone who misgendered me. Like “Do I look like a man to you?” She worried that this would trigger defensiveness and perhaps anger or worse. So I just let being misgendered go. Better to be safe than so…

we've all entered into discussion at some time or another as to whether or not god makes mistakes. our loving cisgender heterosexual brothers and sisters say that he does not - meaning that we were all born the sex/gender we were meant to be, and that we should fulfill our assigned roles thusly. well... i have found proof that god DOES make mistakes... .............CLICKETH THOU HERE <snickers like mugsly from the whacky racers> NOTE: if you read this after 19 october, be sure to choose 19 october 2008 to view the comic strip that applies to this thread. the date can be found below the strip -michael

Hello Everyone, I hope I don't cause a firestorm by what I am about to say, but I need some help sorting out some feelings that I am having concerning the ABC special on B. Jenner this evening. On one hand, I can certainly sympathize with what B. is going through, and to have the courage to talk about it, on national TV, on one level that is awesome. It puts a face to being on the Transgender spectrum. But it is a spectrum, and that is what is bothering me. We are all individuals, and while our own journeys have similarities, they also have differences - occasional, part time, full time, surgery, no surgery, out, in the closet - each one of our journeys is uni…

back in the *70s i saw a movie about a boy who's mother had raised him as a girl - A Reflection of Fear. the "girl" started killing people in the night, and used a broomstick on her female victims - don't think i need to go into any graphic detail there. when i think about this movie now...it seems to reinforce that man just cannot change or undo some things that nature has done - of course we know (or believe) that gender is one of those things. the mother in this movie put her child in girl's clothing, treated the child like a girl, raised the child as if a girl, but in the end, the child went on a [sexually frustrated?] rampage partly because in reality the child …

My therapist expressed the thought, when we were discussing Diane Kearny's "visit" to this forum a while back, that maybe part of the reason why MtFs seem to have such trouble with "the ladder" is that it's a holdover from their male socialization, that feeling of competitiveness and having to have "one up" on the next person. (Not that women never do this, but it seems much more common and overt with men.) Not ever having really swallowed that particular piece of socialization, I found myself agreeing with him, because even at times when I'm considered to be "on top" of a ladder (not this one but others), I find the things annoying and frustrating. It intercedes between…

I have been out in my neighborhood more and more. It's very refreshing to see that people see and treat me like anyone else. I've even received some compliments. It's really wonderful that I can be authentic self. I see that there will be some changes ahead. I don't know what they will be but I sense it. This is nothing new with me because whatever I did sense in the past came to fruition. I will have a clearer picture in the months ahead.

On Sunday at church, a young couple discovered that I am transgender. They sat in the same pew as my wife and me. We know the couple. After service she shared with them tha t the woman standing next to her was her husband. They were quite shocked to say the least. Every week at least one person discover that I'm transgender. It's my way of educating the public. Later in the evening, my wife and I were having coffee at a local restaurant. While she was getting our coffee, a woman at the next table was staring at me. I was busy reading my email but sensed that her eyes were searching me trying to figure me out. Later, my wife stated such. It's happened to me before bu…

I was reading posts on Reddit and came across this response: "So, the actual definition of biological sex is by the type of gametes you produce for your species, not by chromosomes. So there are at most 4 biological sexes: produce smaller gametes (male) produce larger gametes (female) produce both gametes (hermaphroditic) produce no gametes (nonsexual) This is the definition of sex across all sexual species, which is why there are things like "male seahorses give birth" (they have the smaller gametes; the larger gametes are injected into them by the female, who could be said to …

My wife reminds me every day of how she can't live up to the supposedly perfect models on Television and in the magazines. I feel there is a distinct connection between Transgender people especially those with a male body and bio XX women who have masculine features or are simply dealing with weight and other self-esteem issues. It seems that for most of us there is this super self-consciousness of what people will think. In fact even those thoughts are feminine aren't they. What types of positive thinking methods could we use to remind ourselves each day that it's fine to work at being beautiful but the real beauty comes from within and in accepting ourselves as we …

I Have been reading this book by John Maxwell, called, 'Talent is never enough.' If you ever want to read a book that will motivate you to be your best....have confidence in the man or woman you are...this is the book. He has a list in his book that I copied and taped to my frig. Thought I'd share that with all of you. Hope it helps you as much as it is helping me! Don't change just enough to get away from your problems - change enough to solve them. Don't change your circumstances to improve your life - change yourself to improve your circumstances. Don't do the same old things expecting to get different results - get different results by doing something new…

So, quick post. I upgraded to HD cable a few month ago, and, cdue to such, got a whole crap ton of new and weird/different channels Id never seen before. One of these is 'Logo,' the glbt channel. Or should I say G channel. Now, not being xenophobic here, or bigoted, but I honestly could care less for gay themed movies or shows. Personally, it focuses WAY too much on the sexuality of the roles and in turn, lacks actual substance (for example, you dont see hit straight TV shows constantly insisting and blabbing about how AWESOME and GREAT it is to be straight.) So, to be quite honest, I've no desire to watch this channel. I watch shows with substance, not an agenda. …

Hey everyone. I am currently making adjustments to move from New York to North Carolina. My issue is that I have been on hormones for three months. I get them through a health clinic called Callen Lorde. They check my blood and everything. I know that in other states you have to go through all this therapy nonsense to get a prescription for hormones. Am I going to have a problem in North Carolina with getting hormones? Are there any LGBT friendly clinics that assist smoothly with hormone prescriptions? Transition is so very important for me. I cannot get held up by some therapist's approval.

So, as ive said in another post I'm moving in a few days. I haven't told my father because I plan on doing it while he's in church, because of the reason **why** I'm moving (transition related.) So, I've written like 5 or 6 different (long) heartfelt letters to him, telling him that I'm trans and that I had planned to start hrt in less than a year. But slowly the letters have been changing... A few days ago I went out with a few friends and they were asking me about how my father would take the news. I told them its pretty likely that he'll completely reject me, and I started crying. I stopped skating and sat on a curb and just tucked my head into my knees and cried for a…

I know I saw one message on the forum about this when I searched, but I wondered if anyone ever thought they were going through MPD when sorting out gender identity issues? From very early days in my childhood I think I compartmentalized the "girl stuff" in my head and started thinking of her as a ghost personality in my head. Not of the strength that the media-sensationalized MPD people, where there's a total switch-over, memory loss, etc. Just kind of like an imaginary friend who happened to have many of the same wants, needs, and interests as me. An imaginary friend who liked the girl clothes I had and wanted to just wear them, but the guy body had other ideas... …

It is known that there are transgendered people who adapt to society and will never even begin transition. When two of these people with opposite brains come together, interesting things can happen. I married a woman who thinks more like a man and I think exactly like a woman even though I am biologically male. Though I do not want my penis 99% of the time. When I have sex with my wife it does work and we have always enjoyed each other. When I have sex it is almost impossible for me to visualize the experience as a male. I have always imagined myself being the woman and my visualization is so strong that I actually feel as the girl experiencing this. This is s…
