When I look back at all the decisions I've made in my 42 years on this planet I have rarely made any of them on my own behalf. Where I live, what I wear, how I act, where I work. All of these important things were always made to satisfy and fill the needs of other people. Now I have the most important decision in my life to make. The key words being my life. How much of life belongs to me and how much belongs to my wife and kids? I have had to deal with this longer than I've been married and been a dad and most of it alone. My wife has known for just over a year and a few friends too. My friends are lesbians and have been really supportive. My wife has been quiet and pass…

Has anyone had the gender marker changed on their driver's license in Arkansas? What type of documentation is required? Do you have to have surgery first? Is there an official policy? Any information on this topic would be really great. Thanks!

LGBTQIA Initialism It refers collectively to "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" people. In use since the 1990s, the term "LGBT" is an adaptation of the initialism "LGB", which itself started replacing the phrase "gay community" beginning in the mid-to-late... This is an interesting article examining the origins and expansion of the term LGBTQIA ~ Lori

So my girl friend is mtf. I treat her like my girl friend but when we fight she tells me she's not a girl. I am not sure how to deal. I don't have anyone I can really talk to because she doesn't want to be part of the "culture". I really like her so how do I relate?

I am still daddy (though I have been both mum and dad for all intents and purposes for large hunks of their existence and am not sure what else I could be called as the kids have a mummy) I am male at work, my friends all call me dude so I guess that counts as using male pronouns, I have come out to two of my four sisters and they still refer to me by my male name, although Dee was chosen by them from a nickname I already get called and I really like it - they have young kids and until I am being open with everyone they cant be trusted to keep secrets like that. Although I was asked at the start I use my male name with my counsellor, although I am thinking of as…

I’ve been here for about a year and a half now. I’ve met so many amazing people, and learned so much in that time. Many things I never would have thought of, much of which was need-to-know. And unlike other sites I’ve been to, it was offered with love and respect. I’ve seen a few conversations that could be considered controversial, but everyone kept it clean and the language appropriate. This site strives for a PG rating, and it has earned it. So I just wanted to thank everyone here for their help on my journey. And if I have helped even one person for 5 seconds, I want to say thank you for having given me that opportunity.

Queer youth, especially trans youth are more likely to experience poverty due to being unhoused and/or living in a environment that does not support your gender identity / identities in general. Many of my queer peers are stuck working full time jobs with pay barely above minimum wages just to escape their unsupportive households. With the cost of living being at an all-time high, being able to live without support from your parents, fresh out of high school can be, and more often than not is, extremely challenging. On top of that, queer people are often burdened with either no insurance or insurance that does not support the cost of gender affirming care (assuming it is …

Quite often, we "older ones," and those who've been down the transition road will advise people looking to begin their journey, or just questioning their gender, that they should seek out therapists experienced in gender identity, GID, and TG/TS issues. While this is very good advice, perhaps hearing it (reading it) from a therapist will drive the point home. I happened to run across a piece written by one, in which he wrote... Many of my clients both online and off have referred to me as a "friend" at some point in our work together. I cannot think of a better compliment. However, though I am a good guy and a good therapist, you certainly would not want to ask me fo…

I attended two memorial services this weekend. On Saturday we celebrated the life of my friend, Bruce Gerig, a man who came into my life shortly after I came out. He made me feel welcome when I first came to the bible studies at the community center. He was generous, bigger than life, knowledgeable about many subjects, and had an infectious laugh that warmed up a room. What I remember most about Bruce was how comfortable he was with himself as a gay man. It helped me to be comfortable with myself as a transgender person. On Sunday I attended a second memorial for a woman affectionately known as “Rookie”. I never met or knew her but I felt that I did. She was helpful…

...Yeah, it shouldn't be that way, but it is...and there's not much we can do about it. Yet. So... I once commented somewhere among the many threads here at TGG that it seemed one can usually tell if the speaker (or writer) is lesbian or gay: lesbians will always say "LGBT," and quite often, gays will say "GLBT." Even some straight women and men will follow the same "rule." But no matter what, we are always last. Well, that is, if there aren't a slew of other initials tacked on by the well-meaning over-zealous. Some of you may have noticed that I have recently started using "TGLB" instead of "LGBT" or "GLBT." But that's probably only because maybe I make a f…

Hi everyone. Recently I just started going to electrolysis on my face, trying to thin out my facial hair and eventually have it all gone so I don't have to shave anymore. But that isn't my reason for posting this. I had a question for others who are transitioning and either going through or have done electrolysis. Which do you think is better: 1. Doing electrolysis first and then starting hormones 2. Starting hormones at the same time as starting electrolysis 3. Hormone therapy for a few months and then starting electrolysis I'm sure everyone else has started at different times and I was wondering if one way works better than another. Its a little late for me…

Hi everyone, I'm guessing this has been covered before but I couldn't find a specific topic for it. I want to know how other Ts have coped (or are coping) with 'angry explosions' at other people (like friends) who don't understand and touch a raw nerve when commenting on your gender. Or perhaps I'm just really touchy about it? I'm gonna vent a bit here so apologies for waffling but just to enforce my point... I am pre-op so everyone 'knows' me as a girl (even though I've been hopelessly presenting as male for a few years). I don't intend on having surgery any time soon, simply because I can't afford it. But through the way I look and also many verbal hints along the…

This week on Tuesday I received my first hormone prescription. I am so happy upon taking the first steps to transition. Yeah baby yeah, I'm so happy. I even received a round of applause when I told everyone in the support group I visit in NYC. I hope all is well with everyone here. ^_^

Good for her. I wish I had done this at that age instead of trying to live up to other peoples expectations for far too long. http://www.ketv.com/cnn-news/19474067/detail.html OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha couple is allowing their 8-year-old son to openly live life as a girl. It’s a decision that means the child is no longer invited to attend Catholic school. Therapists and the child’s parents say the second grade student is transgender, a medical condition where a person’s inner sense of identity doesn’t match their biological gender. Some gender experts say as many as one in 500 people may be transgender or carry significant traits of the opposite sex. “It’s ki…

At this point this point I've been on HRT for like a little more then 2 months and right now the only member of my family that knows I'm transgendered is my mom. It took her a while to get over the initial shock and everything. But she's dealing with it quite well, she doesn't like it but she doesn't try to get in my way or anything. I'm just worried about telling my other family members about me transitioning. My family is a bit on the religious conversative side I don't think the rest of them will take it that well though. :(

OK, maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. Maybe not. I'm a bit puzzled about something I'd like to do. Will gladly listen to anyone's thoughts on the matter. I'm still thinking of dressing for Halloween, and it's occured to me that my makeup skills are nill. I was thinking of recruiting the woman next door to help me out once or twice to get some practice. I think she would be OK with helping as long as it's for Halloween. What has me concerned is for me dressing for Halloween might be a bit pseudo-sexual. I'd like her help, but because of this last factor I'm afraid I probably should not ask her to help since for me it might be a bit more than dress-up. I know I…
