  1. Jan 31, 7:16 AM EST By CLAUDIA LAUER Associated Press DALLAS (AP) -- A New Jersey woman whose son was asked to leave his Boy Scouts troop after leaders found out he is transgender said she has mixed emotions about the organization's decision to allow transgender children who identify as boys to enroll in its boys-only programs. The Boy Scouts of America announced Monday that enrollment in its boys-only programs will now be based on the gender a child or parent lists on his application to become a scout, rather than the gender listed on the child's birth certificate. When teased at school about being quiet and liking dolls, Thomas would repeat his simple response, "I am a girl." Thomas, now 11, goes by the name of Tammy, wears dresses to school and lives as a girl. TransYouth Family Advocates has released a thought-provoking video titled "Transgender Children - Out of the Shadows." The video can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1LPs8sE4M0 I wish I could have benefited from such public awareness when I was a child. During my childhood, I was thoroughly traumatized by adult reactions to some of my displays of gender incongruity. The effect of the negative reactions shamed me into 25 years of repression, and all the awful internal fighting and turmoil that naturally accompanies. I would add one more item to their "top ten" list; Never to scold the child or make them feel as if they are doing something wrong when expr…

  20. This article doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. But I decided to post it for all the cisgender people that might be lurking around - the ones who might be looking for answers, but don't know how to go about it. The ones who find themselves in that group that is afraid of transpeople, or dislikes transpeople, or believes that transpeople are somehow wrong, abnormal, mentally disturbed, deviant, etc. This is to challenge such people to look at the picture that accompanies this article, and then answer the question, "how can you hate this child, this little girl?" Maybe then, if they realize there is nothing there to hate or fear, and realize that thi…

by David Yi Katherine, a gentle 19-year old from Brooklyn, is many things: Bangladeshi American, an avid gamer, Muslim, a future programmer. But one thing she is not: human. At least, that’s what she's been told by the family who rejected her. In the cramped apartment she shares with her parents and siblings, Katherine is a ghost. Virtually ignored, she spends her days invisible in the hallway, the only place she doesn’t get in the way of her mother who is seldom outside the kitchen, her father who spends his days in the living room, and her siblings, who hide themselves away in their small room. Katherine doesn’t have a room, let alone a bed she can call her own. “I sle…
